Consumer Supported Agriculture

(CSA Program)

Before I started farming, I had never heard of a CSA (Consumer Supported Agriculture) Program. Soon after farming for a while, I learned about them. It is a simple concept: consumers provide a sum of money to a farmer in the early season for a share (e.g. $600 per season, or $300 per half-season), when not many crops are producing, but when the most costs of starting the farm are incurred, then the farmer provides crops he grows to his consumers weekly or bi-weekly. Either the crops are delivered to their doorstep, or they are picked up at the farm.

The idea sounds great on paper, but the more I heard about them, the more I learned about people's problems with them. Such as getting lots of things they don't want or need, or just not getting their money's worth. I do not think this should be how those folks supporting a farm should be treated, so I designed our own CSA Program that allows for the utmost convenience and flexibility for our customers.
In the Luckyfoot Ranch CSA Program, the farm still gets to cover our season start-up costs, while you get to pick what produce you want, and when you want it. You can also choose how large of a share you would like to purchase.

How this works, is the customer provides any dollar amount of $50 (with a minimum of $250) to us at the beginning of the season (January-May). This amount is then matched, in vouchers, back to the customer 110% (e.g. $275 in vouchers for $250, $330 in vouchers for $300, etc), ensuring the customer is getting their full dollars worth. These vouchers can then be used for any produce, at any Luckyfoot Ranch location (any Farmer's Market, or the Farm Stand), meaning that produce can be picked up, up to 5 days a week. Say you don't like spring crops (radishes, turnips, greens, etc), you can wait until summer crops (tomatoes, peppers, squash, etc) are coming in, to use your vouchers, so you’re getting only the produce you want, and nothing you don't.
